Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom brings August Wilson’s play to Netflix on December 18th. Viola Davis stars as Ma Rainey, “Mother of the Blues”, and Chadwick Boseman stars as Levee, the ambitious horn player. Follow the story of artists that refuse to let their life be dictated what the white producers want from them.
Ma Rainey breaks multiple rules for August Wilson’s plays. She is the only character in his saga of plays that is based on a real person. Ma is also the only LGBTQ characters in all of his plays. Ma is an lesbian who isn’t afraid to proclaim that.
The film shows the fearlessness and tenacity of Ma Rainey and her trailblazing efforts for the Blues. It also showcases the tenacity of Levee, her coronet player, and his desire to create music and not be held back because he is African American.
All of these messages are wrapped in a bow thanks to the experienced team of filmmakers. Producers of the film include Denzel Washington, Todd Black, and Danny Wolf. The film is directed by five-time Tony Award winner and DGA Award winner George C. Wolfe. The screenplay is by Ruben Santiago-Hudson.
Join Ma Rainey and her band on Netflix on December 18th.
